maternal and newborn Flashcards
Newborn Care
- Stabilize the newborn:
Top priority = ensure effective
respirations and warmth.
1. Clear airway: Suction mouth
first, then nose.
Newborns may gasp during
nasal suctioning, which
can cause aspiration if the
mouth is not suctioned first
Dry newborn:
- Rub with blanket
to warm and stimulate breathing. - Promote thermoregulation:
If stable, place skin to skin.
If unstable, move to radiant
warmer for resuscitation.
Prevent heat loss (swaddle,
apply a hat, place blanket
between newborn and
cold surfaces).
Assess the newborn:
Measure APGAR score at 1 and 5 min:
.At birth, prioritize ensuring effective respirations and preventing cold stress by suctioning the newborn’s
mouth, then nose; drying the newborn; and placing skin to skin. Measure APGAR scores at 1 and 5 min of life.
nclex tip
Place matching identification bands on mother and newborn and teach parents how to
identify authorized staff and to never leave newborn unattended or with unauthorized personnel.
feeding/meconium
Ensure a minimum of 8 feedings in 24 hr.
Monitor output:
If no void by 24 hr or no meconium by 48 hr
of birth, assess intake and notify HCP.
NORMAL NEWBORN VITAL SIGNS
Temperature
(axillary)
97.7 F-99.5 F (36.5 C-37.5 C)
Avoid rectal temperatures
(rectal perforation risk).
Pulse 120-160 beats/min
Respirations 30-60 breaths/min
BP Not routinely assessed
breathing expected and not expected
Central cyanosis indicates respiratory distress, while acrocyanosis is expected. Breathing cessation lasting
≥20 seconds is apnea and requires immediate resuscitation.
