Lupus & Lyme Disease
Lupus findings:
A malar “butterfly” rash (classic sign), arthritis, and extreme fatigue are key findings.
Risk for lupus nephritis
Risk for pericarditis, pleuritis
Monitor for chest pain
and friction rub.
Lupus nephritis:
Monitor renal function studies
and report signs of elevated creatinine and
proteinuria.
Hydroxychloroquine:
Clients with lupus taking
hydroxychloroquine are at risk for retinal toxicity.
Teach clients to schedule annual eye exams.
Tick bite prevention:
Teach clients to wear long
sleeves and pants, use DEET repellent, and perform
full-body tick checks to prevent tick bites.
Lyme disease:
A “bull’s-eye” rash and flu-like symptoms are early signs of Lyme disease and require
immediate treatment with antibiotics (doxycycline).
