adult health Flashcards
Valve Disorders (5 cards)
Aortic stenosis:
Aortic stenosis causes a systolic murmur at the 2nd intercostal space, right sternal border.
Aortic stenosis decreases cardiac output, which causes Syncope, Angina, and Dyspnea (SAD findings).
Mitral stenosis:
Mitral stenosis causes a
diastolic murmur at the 5th intercostal space,
midclavicular line.
Post-valve replacement:
Monitor for bleeding
and signs of cardiac tamponade, like hypotension, muffled heart sounds, and jugular vein distention.
Mechanical valve teaching:
Teach clients that
mechanical valve replacement requires lifelong
warfarin therapy to prevent clot formation and
regular lab work for INR monitoring.
Infective endocarditis: C
lients with artificial valves
are at increased risk for endocarditis. Teach clients
they must take prophylactic antibiotics before
dental work or other invasive procedures.
