Mobility & Positioning
Immobility
Early ambulation and frequent repositioning are
top priorities to prevent complications like skin
breakdown, atelectasis, DVTs, and muscle atrophy.
Positioning
Fowler positions improve ventilation in clients
with respiratory or cardiac issues. When clients
with lung conditions are positioned laterally,
position the unaffected (good) lung down.
Assistive Devices
To avoid axillary nerve damage, clients should hold
crutches so that elbows are flexed 30 degrees
and weight is distributed to the hands and arms,
not the axilla.
Assistive Devices
When using stairs with crutches or a cane, lead
with the unaffected leg when going up and the
cane and affected leg when going down (up with
the good, down with the bad).
