ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome Flashcards
What is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)?
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a complication seen in some forms of infertility treatment.
What causes OHSS?
OHSS is postulated to be caused by the presence of multiple luteinized cysts within the ovaries, resulting in high levels of oestrogens, progesterone, and vasoactive substances such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
What hormones and substances are elevated in OHSS?
In OHSS, levels of oestrogens, progesterone, and vasoactive substances such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are elevated.
What is the result of increased membrane permeability in OHSS?
Increased membrane permeability in OHSS results in the loss of fluid from the intravascular compartment.
Is OHSS commonly seen with clomifene therapy?
OHSS is rarely seen with clomifene therapy.
What treatments are more likely to cause OHSS?
OHSS is more likely to be seen following gonadotropin or hCG treatment.
What percentage of women undergoing IVF may experience a mild form of OHSS?
Up to one third of women undergoing IVF may experience a mild form of OHSS.
What symptoms are associated with mild OHSS?
Mild OHSS symptoms include abdominal pain and abdominal bloating.
What symptoms are associated with moderate OHSS?
Moderate OHSS symptoms include those of mild OHSS plus nausea, vomiting, and ultrasound evidence of ascites.
What symptoms are associated with severe OHSS?
Severe OHSS symptoms include those of moderate OHSS plus clinical evidence of ascites, oliguria, haematocrit > 45%, and hypoproteinaemia.
What symptoms are associated with critical OHSS?
Critical OHSS symptoms include those of severe OHSS plus thromboembolism, acute respiratory distress syndrome, anuria, and tense ascites.
