IUGR_Flashcards
What is IUGR and how does it relate to SGA?
IUGR describes a fetus with reduced growth rate, leading to a baby that becomes small for gestational age (SGA). All IUGR fetuses are SGA, but not all SGA babies are IUGR.
What are the antenatal monitoring recommendations for IUGR?
Antenatal monitoring includes serial growth scans every 2 weeks and Doppler ultrasound scans twice a week to look at umbilical artery blood flow.
What should mothers with IUGR be advised to monitor?
Mothers should be advised to monitor fetal movements.
What are the indications for immediate delivery in IUGR?
Indications for immediate delivery include abnormal CTG and reduced fetal movements, and abnormal Doppler waveform (reversal of end-diastolic flow).
By when is delivery usually necessary for IUGR?
Delivery by 37 weeks is usually necessary for IUGR.
Who leads the decision for delivery in IUGR and what factors are considered?
The decision for delivery is consultant-led and depends on the severity and gestation. Steroids should be given if <36 weeks, and magnesium sulfate if preterm delivery is <30 weeks.
