Q

What is the role of the pupil?

A
  • Is the circular opening in the centre of the iris
  • Light passes into the lens of the eye

Q

What is the role of the iris?

A
  • Regulates the amount of light that enters the eye
  • It forms the coloured, visible part of the eye, in front of the lens

Q

What is the role of the tear glands?

A
  • Lacrimal gland produces aqueous layer of the eyes tear film
  • The aqueous layer is made up of water, proteins, vitamins, electrolytes
  • Helps lubricate the eye, wash debris

Q

What is the role of the humours?

A
  • The aqueous humor bathes and nourishes the lens and maintains pressure within the eye
  • Helps the eye keep its shape

Q

What is the role of the conjunctiva?

A
  • The conjunctiva provides protection and lubricates the eye by the prodection of mucus and tears
  • Prevents microbial entrance into the eye & plays a role in immune surveillance
  • Lines the inside of the eyelids

Q

What is the role of the cornea?

A
  • The transparent/clear circular part of the front of the eyeball
  • It refract the light entering the eye onto the lens
  • Extremely sensitive to pain

Q

What is the role of the retina?

A
  • A light sensitive layer that lines the interior of the eye
  • It composed of light sensitive cells known as rods and cones

Q

What is the role of the macula?

A
  • Is part of the retina at the back of the eye
  • Only 5mm but is responsible for our central vision, most colour and fine detail we see.

Q

What is the role of the optic nerve?

A

Leaves the eye at an optic disc and transfers all visual information to the brain

Q

What is the role of the ciliary muscle/suspensory ligaments?

A
  • Ciliary muscles help in changing shape of the lens to focus on the near object
  • It also controls the flow aqueous humour

Q

What is the role of the lens?

A
  • A transparent structure situated behind the pupil
  • It is enclosed in a thin transparent capsule and helps to refract incoming light and focus on the retina
