Unit4- 2.1~ Structure of respiratory system Flashcards
What is the respiratory system?
Consists of the nose, mouth, throat, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and lungs. It allows for gas exchange between air and blood
What is the function of the nasal cavity?
To humidify and warm the inspired air. It also removes minute aribone particles and other debris from reaching lower airways
What is the function of the pharynx (throat)?
A tube like structure that connects the nose and mouth to the larnyx (voice box)
What is the function of the larnyx (voice box)?
Routes air and food into the correct channels and has a crucial role in speech production.
What is the function of the trachaea (windpipe)?
- A tube that connects the larynx to the bronchi.
- Is lined with cilia (tiny hairs) that sweep upwards moving mucus and unwanted particles out of the lung
- Trachaea splits off to 2 bronchi, which is then split into bronchioles
What is the function of bronchioles?
- It ends in tiny air sacs called alveoli
- Gas exchange occurs heres
What is the function of the bronchi?
- To carry air to and from the lungs
- Moisturise the air we breathe and screen out foreign particles
What is the function of the Alveoli?
Its the centre of the respiratory system gas exchange. It picks up incoming oxygen you breathe in and release the carbon dioxide you exhale
What is the role of the diaphragm?
- It seperates your chest from your abdominal cavity
- It helps to get rid of urine and feces by increasing pressure inside the abdomen
