Unit4- 1.9~ Monitoring, treatment and care needed for CV malfunctions Flashcards
What is the monitoring and treatment for CHD?
- Family history is considered
- Blood tests
- ECG tests
- Changes in lifestyle
Why does family history have to be monitored?
If theres history of CHD, theres a higher risk of developing conditions that can lead to a heart attack or stroke
Explain blood tests for CHD
Can help diagnose CHD and determine risk of devloping it measuring cholesterol and other substances in the blood. E.g. high lvls of ‘bad’ cholesterol can increase risk heart attack.
Explain ECG tests
ECG (electrocardiogram) helps diagnose CHD by recording the electrical activity of the heart. Chnages in ECG waves indicates CHD or a heart attack
What is the medication for CHD?
- Beta blockers: They work by blocking the effects of a hormone in the body, slowing the heartbeat and improving blood flow
- Antiplatelets: Medicine that helps reduce risk of heart attack by thinning blood and preventing clotting
What is the monitoring and treatment for hypertension?
- Regular blood pressure testing
- If high blood pressure but low risk for other things you would be given lifestyle changes
- If high blood pressure but high risk, medication would be offered
What is the medication for hypertension?
Under 55:
* Angiotensin- converting enzymes (ACE) (relaxes blood vessels)
* Angiotensin-2 recepter blockers (ARBs)
Over 55:
* Calcium channel blockers (reduce blood pressure by widening blood vesseks
* Beta blockers: reduce blood pressure, making heart beat slowly
