Unit4- 5.3~ Nerve action Flashcards

1
Q

What is nerve action?

A
  • Information being transmitted across the body through nerve cells/neurons
  • Neurons transmit messages in forms of electrical signals called nerve impulses or action potential

Q

Explain the axon

A
  • Are very thin nerve fibres that carries nerve impulses away from the neuron to another neuron
  • A neuron recieves sensory input, sending motor commands to muscles
  • Every neuron has one axon that onnects it with other neurons or with muscle or gland cells

Q

Explain the myelin sheath

A
  • An insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in brain, spinal cord
  • It allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells
  • If myelin is damaged, these impulses slow down

Q

Explain the synapse

A
  • Is a small gap at the end of a neuron that alows a signal to pass from one neuron to the next, via neurotransmitter chemical
  • Are found where nerve cells connect with other nerve cells
  • They’re key to the brains function especially when it comes to memory
