Unit4- 5.3~ Nerve action Flashcards
1
Q
What is nerve action?
A
- Information being transmitted across the body through nerve cells/neurons
- Neurons transmit messages in forms of electrical signals called nerve impulses or action potential
2
Q
Explain the axon
A
- Are very thin nerve fibres that carries nerve impulses away from the neuron to another neuron
- A neuron recieves sensory input, sending motor commands to muscles
- Every neuron has one axon that onnects it with other neurons or with muscle or gland cells
3
Q
Explain the myelin sheath
A
- An insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in brain, spinal cord
- It allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells
- If myelin is damaged, these impulses slow down
4
Q
Explain the synapse
A
- Is a small gap at the end of a neuron that alows a signal to pass from one neuron to the next, via neurotransmitter chemical
- Are found where nerve cells connect with other nerve cells
- They’re key to the brains function especially when it comes to memory
