What are the breakdown functions of the liver?

- Deamination
- Detoxification
- Production of bile

What occurs during deamination?
A
- Removal of amino group from amino acids
- Remaining amino acids go into cellular respiration- resulting in ATP and heat energy

What occurs during detoxification?
A
- Liver represents the body’s filtration system- removes alcohol (poison)
- Converts toxins into waste products, cleansing the body and metabolising nutrients and medicationn to provide the body with important proteins

What occurs during the production of bile?
A
- Bile is produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, an organ directly attached to the liver
- Bile allows liver cells to break down and recycle blood cells
