Unit4- 5.1~ Components of nerve systems Flashcards
What does the nervous system do?
It allows the body to communicate and coordinate its actions.
What are the 2 main parts to nervous system is split into?
- The central nervous system (CNS)- The brain and spianl card
- The peripheral nervous system (PNS)- Nerves
What role does the brain and spinal cord play in the CNS?
- Brain- Controls thought, memory, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger and processes that regulates our body
- Spinal cord- Its a long cyllindrical structure that connects the brain and lower back. It helps carry electrical nerve signals throughout the body
What is the role of the peripheral nerves?
- This is responsible for relaying information between the body and brain
- This includes involuntary functions like breathing, blood flow, heartbeat as well as sensory information and voluntary movements.
What 2 neurons are apart of the peripheral nerves (Somatic system)?
- Sensory neurons
- Motor neurons
What is the role of sensory neurons?
carry messages from the sense organs to the CNS. e.g. touch, taste
What is the role of the motor neurons?
Carry messages from the brain/CNS to tissues like muscles
What is the role of the autonomic system in the perphiral nerves?
Regulates involuntary physiologic processes including heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, digestion, and sexual arousal.
What are the 2 functions of the autonomic system?
- Parasympathetic nerves
- Sympathetic nerves
What does parasympathetic nerves do?
Regulates ‘rest and digest’ functions
What does sympathetic nerves do?
- Controls ‘fight or flight’ responses
- Prepares body for strenuous physical activity
What are some roles of the parasympathetic nerves?
- Slows heart rate
- Contracts bladder
- Constricts pupils
What are some roles of the sympathetic nerves?
- Dilates pupils
- Accelerates heart rate
- Secretes adrenaline
- Inhibits bladder contraction
