Unit 4- 2.3~ Gaseous exchange Flashcards
What is gaseous exchange?
The process by which oxugen is transported to cells and carbon dioxide is taken away fom cells
What is the role of alveoli walls?
Aveoli walls has a thin lining that enables a fast diffusion of gas exchange between the air in the alveoli and the blood in the surrounding capillaries
What is the structure of the alveoli walls?
- Type I cells: Flat cells that allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through
- Type II cells: Produces a substance to keep alveoli from collapsing
- Capillaries: Tiny blood vessels surrounding the alveoli for gas exchange
- Elastic fibre: Helps alveli stretch and recoil during breathing
Explain diffusion gradients
Gas exhange is achieved by diffusion. This is where particles move from a high concentratoin are to a low concentration are. They move down a concetration gradient the steeper the gradient is and the faster the rate of diffusion
What is the role of erythrocytes?
To carry and deliver the oxygen to the tissue in our body, usually in the hemegloblin.
What is the role of plasma?
Plamsa acts as a transport medium for deliver hormones, nuntriets to our body, helping oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange.
