Unit4- 1.6~ Types, structures and functions of blood vessels Flashcards
1
Q
What are the types blood vessels?
A
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
2
Q
What is the structure of arteries?
A
- Thick walled, muscular and elastic to withstand high pressure of blood pumepd from the heart
- Have a narrow lumen (central cavity) and a thick wall with three layers
- Innermost: endothelium, middle: muscular layer, outer: connective tissue
3
Q
What is the function of arteries?
A
To transport oxygenated blood from the heart to various body tissues. The muscular layer wall constricts and dilates to regulate blood flow and pressure
4
Q
What is the structure of veins?
A
- Have a large lumen and thin walls
- Not exosed to pressure so walls are less thick and elastic
- Veins contain valves to prevent backflow of blood
5
Q
What is the function of veins?
A
Carry de-oxygenated blood and waste products from body tissue back to the heart, under low pressure. Veins have valves to ensure the one-way movement of blood against gravity
6
Q
What is the structure of capillaries?
A
- Very thin wall composed of a single layer of epithelial cells
- This feature facilitates rapid exchange of materials between blood and cells
7
Q
What is the function of capillaries?
A
- Transports oxygens and nutrients to cells
- Supplies tissues
- Removes waste and carbon dioxide
