Unit 4- 2.4~ Cellular respiration Flashcards
What is cellular respiration?
A metabolic pathway that uses glucose yo produce ATP, an organis compound the body uses for energy
What is the role of glucose?
It provides the buiding blocks for ultimately creating ATP, energy used by living organisms
What is the role of oxygen?
Its used as the end electron acceptor for the electron transport chain. It allows electrons to be transferred through the electron transport chain in order to create an electrochemical gradient for hydrogen to create ATP
What is the function of ATP?
It captures chemical energy obtained from the breakdown of food molecules and release it to fuel other cellular processes.
What are the 2 types of cellular respiration?
- Aerobic
- Anaerobic
Explain anaerobic cellular respiration.
A process that produces cellular energy without oxygen. Glycolysis is the anaerobic step in cellular respiration that occurs before the cell decides to go through fermentation or the Krebs Cycle. It breaks down glucose into pyruvate and generates a small amount of ATP, and can occur in the absence of oxygen
Explain aerobic cellular respiration.
Cellular respiration that proceeds in the presence of oxygen is aerobic respiration. It breaks down glucose and combines the brokn product with oxygen and makes water and carbon dioxide
