What are the accidents and emergencies in HSC/CC settings?
- Accidents
- Exposure to infections
- Exposure to chemicals
- Aggressive and dangerous encounters
- Fire

- Other critical incidents
What are accidents caused by and give and example?
- It can be caused by poorly maintained areas, fittings or equipment. E.g. a fractires limb from slipping on a wet floor
- Poor working practices can also cause accidents. E.g. A slipeed disc from positioning an individual on a bed without using safe handling techniques
What are exposures to infections caused by and give an example?
- Can be caused by poor environmental conditions. E.g. inadequate ventilation and lack of running water, creating conditions where pathogens can thrive
- Poor working practices. E.g. inadequate cleaning facilities and poor personal hygiene can spread infections
What are exposure to chemicals caused by and give an example?
They’re caused when an individual is exposed to hazardous substances, like steralising equipment, or cleaning areas. E.g. mixing bleach with other chemicals
What are aggressive and dangerous encouters caused by and give an example?
They caused by intruders, dissatisfied service users or those with mental health issues who may be under the influence. E.g. A bruised eye from an individual hitting someone who has abused alcohol.
What are fires casued by and give an example?
Fires occur when oxygen, fuel and heat is present. E.g an appliance with faulty wiring, chemicals sotred near heat sources
What are floods caused by and give an example?
- They’re caused by water escaping from an item like washing machines, bath, toilet, pipes. E.g Taps left on
- Failure to carry out maintanence checks E.g. faulty washing machine
What is loss of water supply caused by and give an example?
- Caused by a burst pipe. E.g. a leak in the mains system
- A lack of routine maintanance checks.
What are spillages caused by and give an example?
Caused by spillages of bodily fluids which can lead to infection outbreaks and diseases. E.g. blood, vomit.
What are intruders caused by and give an example?
- Poor maintained premises E.g. inadequate window locks, broken doors
- Poor working practicies failing to prevent unauthorised areas E.g. privacy of elctronic and paper based information and records
What is and example of other critical incidents?
- A faulty light switch or electrical appliances
- A gas leak from faulty pipwork
- A bomb threat
