Unit4- 5.2~ Structure and function of brain Flashcards
What components make up the brain?
- cerebral cortex
- cerebellum
- frontal lobes
- corpus callosum
- hypothalamus
- medulla
What is the role of the cerebral cortex?
The outer surface of the brain, is associated with higher level proccesses like:
* Consciousness
* Thr=ought
* Reasoning
* Language
* memory
What is the role of the hypothalamus?
- Is a gland that controls the hormone system
- It releases hormones to another part of the brain called the pituitary gland which sends hormones out to your different organs
What is the role of the cerebellum?
- Responsible for coordinating voluntary movements. Also for a nb of functions like motor skills such as balance, coordination, posture
- It recieves information from other regions of the brain & nervous system. The information is used to coordinate and control voluntary movements
What is the role of the medulla?
Transmitts signals between the spinal cord and higher parts of brain and in controlling autonomic activities like heartbeat, respiration
What is the role of the frontal lobe?
Is part of the brain that controls cognitive skills like:
* Emomtional expression
* Problem solving
* Memory
* Language
* Judgement
* Sexual behaviours
What is the role of the corpus callosum?
- Sits in the centre of the brain, shaped like a C, 10m in length
- It connects the left side of the brain to the right side, each side known as hemisphere. The connection allows information to pass through between the 2.
What is the role of the meninges?
It protects the CNS from trauma injury to brain like a blow to the head by acting as a shock absorber. They anchor the CNS and keep the brain from moving around within the skull
