What is the digestive system?
The process of food being broken down and exiting the body
What is the function of the bucuul cavity/mouth?
The bucuul cavity is the mechanical breakdown of food. We chew with our mouths breaking food into smaller parts. It also facilitates swallowing
What is the function of the salivary glands?
It produces saliva which lubricates the mouth and throat aiding swallowing. It also contains amylase for starch digestion
What is the function of the epligottis?
It folds backwards to cover the entrance of the larynx so food & water doesnt go down the windpipe and enter the lungs
What is the function of the oesophagus?
It carries food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach
What is the function of the stomach?
It digests food. When it recieves food, it contracts and produces acids & enzymes to break down food
What is the function of the small intestines?
It further digests food, breaking it down by enzymes. It absorbs nutrients from the food and is taken through the villi.
What is the function of the large intestines?
It absorbs water, electrolytes and produces and absorbs minerals. It also forms and propels feces to the rectum
What is the function of the rectum?
It stores and releases feces before egestion
What is the function of the anus?
It expels the feces from the body
What is the function of the liver?
It produces bile, a chemical that breaks down fats. It carries waste to the small intestines and aids digestion and absorbtion in the small intestines
What is the function of the gallbladder?
It stores and concentrates the bile from the liver
What is the function of the bile duct?
It carries bile from the liver to the gallbladder and then to the small intestines where it helps break down food
What is the function of the pancreas?
It produces enzymes and hormones that helps break down and regulate blood sugar levels. It also produces alkaline juice which nuetralises acidic chyme entering the small intestines
What is the function of the pancreatic duct?
It carries digestive juice from the pancreas to the small intestines
