What is a first aider?
Someone responsibly trained to provide initial care to individuals who are injured or ill whilst waiting for professional help.
What are the 3 Ps of a first aider?
- Preserving life
- Preventing worsening
- Promoting recovery
What is preserving life from the 3 Ps.
Carrying out emergency first aid procedures that doesnt place anyone in danger, assessing danger is always the first step
What is preventing worsening from the 3 Ps?
Preventing further harm to the casualty or their condition worsening. E.g. by not moving a casualty’s limb if it appears broken
What is promoting recovery from the 3 Ps?
By getting medical help quickly, staying with the individual until help arrives, reassuring them.
What does DR’S ABC stand for and what is it used for?
It is used to help first aiders remember what to do when they come across an accident or sudden illness.

What occurs during danger checks from DR’S ABC?
Look around and check for any risks or signs of danger
What occurs during response assessment from DR’S ABC?
Assess all casualties and check whether or not they are conscious by asking questions or gently shaking their shoulders
What occurs during shout for help from DR’S ABC?
Call an ambulance or get someone to call for you
What occurs during airway checks from DR’S ABC?
Check that the casualties airway is open and not blocked by tilting their head back by lifting from their chin. Check if people are on there way.
What occurs during breathing checks from DR’S ABC?
Check whether the casualty is breathing normally, by listening to their breathing or seeing if their chest is moving up and down. If they are place them in recovery position, if not perform CPR.
What occurs during circulation checks from DR’S ABC?
Continue to monitor the casualty and check for severe bleeding. Check help is on the way
