Q

Facts about the sensory reg?

A

-takes in info from env
-includes iconic memory- stores visual info
-echoic for sound
-less than half a sec duration
-high capacity
-passes onto STM if u pay attention

Q

Facts on STM?

A

-Mainly acoustically - 18secs unless rehearsed
-limited capacity until forgotten
-capacity is between 5 and 9 items
-maintence reharsal needed e.g repeat material over and over again
-once rehearsed enough goes to LTM

Q

facts on LTM?

A

-permanenet store
-rehearsed for a long time
-mainly semantically
-duration up to lifetime
-unlimited capacity
-to recall info from LTM it has be transferred back into STM by process called retrieval

Q

strengths of multi store model
and counterpoint

A

(research support)
-shows LTM and STM are diff
-Baddeley said we may mix up words that sound similar when using our STM
-but mix up words w similar meaning in LTM
-STM and LTM are inpendant stores

(counterpoint this)
-alot of the studies use digits, words, letters w no meaning
-so not valid to everyday life when we have to remember meaningful info

Q

weaknesses of MSM?

A

(more than one STM store)
-shallice and warrinton studied client w amensia
-STM for digits was poor when read out loud to him
-recall better when read digits to himself
-further studies of KF found there could be another STM store for non verbal sounds (noises)
-MSM wrong in claiming theres only one STM store procesing diff info e,g visual and audiotry

(elabortaive reheasal)
-prolonged rehearsal not needed for transfer to LTM
-Craik and watkins founf type of rehearsal is more important
-elaborative needed for LTM storage
when u link info to exisitng knowledge or you think ab what it means
-so MSM doesnt explain how long term storage is achieved

(bygone model)
-LTM like STM is not single memory state
-we have one LTM store for our memories of facts ab the world
-diff one for our memories of how to ride a bike
-more than one type of STM anad more than one type of rehearsal
-MSM is overestimated model of memory
