A

-treat depression

CBT and becks cognitive therapy?

A

-focuses on negative triad
-thoughts about self, world and future identified by patient and therpaist then challenged
-patient made to test reality of their beliefs
-set hw to record when someone was nice to them for example(client as scientist)
-later proved to client their statement isnt true

what does the REBT do?

A

-identify and dispute irriaitonal thoughts
-if patient talks of how unfair life is
the therapist sees it as utopianism and challenge the thought using a vigrous argument
-breaks link between negative life events and depression
-irriational thought is challenged

what is behavioural activation?

A

-when individuals are depressed they avoid or isolate themselves to maintain symotoms or worsen them
-behavioural activation decreases avoidance and increase engagment to imporve mood
-e.g exercise or go out for dinner
-therpaist reinforces this

CBT evaluate- strengths

A

effectivness?
-works
-march et al comapred CBT to anti depressants and also a combo of both
-when treating 327 teens
-after 36 wks, 81% of CBT grp and 81% of antidepressant group imapacted
-including 86% of cbt and anti dep significantly imapcted
-cbt only requires 6 to 12 sessions - cost effective
-cbt seen as first treatment in NHS

CBT evaluate - limitaions

A

(sustainablity for diverse clients:)
-lack effectivness for severe cases and learning dis
-severe dep may cause lack of motivation and lack of attention in sessions
-complex rational thinking required in sessions may be unsuitable
-talking therapies unsuitbale for those w learning dis
-cbt only appropriate for a few
(relapse rates:)
-high relapse
-short term benefits
-ali et al = assesed 439 clients every month for 12 months after cbt
- 42% relapse within 6 months
-53% within a year
-cbt may have to be repeated periodcally
(client preference:)
-some clients prefer meds to tackle symptoms quick
-survivors of truama= prefer tp explore origins of symptoms
-yrondi et al - found depressed ppl rated cbt as least preffered
