Where does the nerve arise?

Where does the nerve travel?

A
  • Two separate nuclei in the medulla oblongata:
    • Motor nucleus located rostral
    • Parasympathetic nucleus located caudal to the motor nucleus
  • Nuclei:
    • Nucl. n. facialis → somatomotor
    • Nucl. salviatorius rostralis → secretomotor
    • Nucl. tractus spinalis n. trigemini → somatosensory
    • Nucl. tractus solitarii → special sensory
  • These two nuclei unite to form the roots of the n. facialis and joined by sensory fibers from ggl. geniculate
  • Travels in the canalis facialis
