Topic 6: Heredity and Predicting Inheritance Flashcards
1
Q
What is inheritance?
A
- the transfer of genetically determined characteristics from 1 generation to the next
2
Q
What is genetics the study of?
A
- inheritance
3
Q
What are alleles?
A
- genes occupying the same locus on homologous chromosomes
4
Q
What are the two types of alleles?
A
- homozygous and heterozygous
5
Q
What does homozygous mean?
A
- both alleles express the same version of a trait
ex. blonde hair (bb), black hair (BB)
6
Q
What does heterozygous mean? (2)
A
- different alleles of the same gene
- alleles code for different expressions of the same trait
eg. Bb
7
Q
What is a genotype?
A
- catalogue of a person’s genes (genetic makeup)
8
Q
What is a phenotype?
A
- expression of genotype (genes) to give observable characteristics
ex. black hair
9
Q
What is a dominant allele?
A
- expressed in phenotype regardless of other allele
- ex. BB or Bb - dominant allele eg. black hair
10
Q
What is a recessive allele?
A
- expressed in phenotype only if present on both alleles
- ex. bb is blonde hair
11
Q
What is the purpose of a Punnett Square? (2)
A
- determines the probability of inheritance
- predicts offspring genotype and phenotype
12
Q
Does a Punnett Square always turn out to be true?
A
- no, it only determines the probability of having those traits on offspring
ex. if you have a 25% chance of blonde hair, it does not guarantee that 1/4 kids will be blonde
