Topic 16: Urinary System - Nephrons Flashcards
What are nephrons composed of? (2)
- renal corpuscle
-renal tubules
Where is the renal corpuscle located?
- in cortex
What is the function of the renal corpuscle?
- site of blood filtration (first step in urine formation)
What are the three parts of a renal corpuscle?
- glomerulus
- Bowman’s Capsule
- Filtration membrane
What is the glomerulus?
capillary bed
What is a bowman’s capsule? (2)
- surrounds glomerulus
- collects filtrate from glomerulus
What are the two layers of a bowman’s capsule? aka outer and inner
outer - simple squamous
inner - podocytes wrapped around glomerular capillaries
What is the filtration membrane of a nephron composed of? (3)
- Glomerular endothelium (capillaries)
- Basement membranes
- Podocytes (of Bowman’s Capsule)
What is the structure of the filtration membrane of glomerular endothelium?
- simple squamous with pores called fenestrations
what is the structure of the filtration membrane of podocytes of Bowman’s capsule? (2)
- simple epithelium
- projections cling to glomerulus
What are the 4 parts of the renal tubules?
- Proximal convoluted tubule (PCT)
- Loop of Henle
- Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT)
- Collecting ducts
Where is the proximal convoluted tubule located?
- in cortex
What is the loop of henle, and where is it located?
- descending and ascending limbs
- in medulla
Where is the distal convoluted tubule located?
in cortex
What are the collecting ducts in renal tubules? (2)
- connect nephron to ureter
- via calyces and renal pelvis
