Topic 1: Levels of Organization Flashcards
What are the 6 levels of organization, from simple to complex?
- Chemical level (basic level)
- Cellular level
- Tissue level
- Organ level
- organ system level
- Organism
What is the chemical level? (2)
- atoms (like H + O atoms)
- atoms join to form molecules (like water)
What is the cellular level? (3)
- molecules form organelles, which form cells
- cells are the basic unit of structure and function
- all cells contain chemicals, but their functions may differ (rbc, neurons, muscle cells)
What is the tissue level? (2)
- a group of structurally similar cells with a common function
- there are 4 major tissues
Name the 4 major tissues
- epithelium
- Connective Tissue (CT)
- Muscle
- Nervous
What type of tissue is epithelium?
lining type of tissue
What type of tissue is connective tissue (CT)?
it bridges the gap between 2 tissues
What type of tissue is muscle?
contractile tissue
What type of tissue is nervous tissue?
signaling
What is the organ level?
- 2 or more tissues working together for a common function
Give an example of the organ level of organization
The stomach has all 4 major tissues working together to digest
What is the organ system level?
- several related organs that work together to accomplish a common purpose
Give an example of the organ system level of organization
- The respiratory system
- trachea, bronchi, lungs, etc. work together for respiration
What is the organism level?
all systems function together to maintain life
