Topic 19: Nervous System - Cell Types - Glial Cells Flashcards
1
Q
What is the function of neuroglia cells? (2)
A
- support neurons
- can undergo mitosis (prone to cancer)
2
Q
What are the 4 types of glial cells in the CNS?
A
- Oligodendrocytes
- Microglia
- Astrocytes
- Ependymal

3
Q
what are oligodendrocytes?
A
- produce myelin around axon
4
Q
what are microglia? (2)
A
- protective
- become phagocytic if detect infected, dead, or damaged neurons (since immune cells cannot enter CNS)
5
Q
What are astrocytes? (2)
A
- surround blood capillaries to form part of blood brain barrier (BBB)
- help control capillary permeability
6
Q
What type of tissue does the ependymal cells have?
A
neural epithelia
7
Q
What is the function of ependymal cells? (2)
A
- lines brain ventricles and central canal of the spinal cord
- secretes cerebrospinal fluid and circulates it (cilia)
8
Q
What two glial cells are in the PNS? (2)
A
- Schwann cells
- Satellite Cells
9
Q
What do schwann cells form?
A
- myelin around axons in PNS
10
Q
What do satellite cells surround?
A
- neuron cell bodies in ganglia for protection and support
