Topic 12: Cardiovascular System: Anatomy of Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are the three layers of blood vessels?
1) Tunica Externa
2) Tunica Media
3) Tunica Intima/interna
What tissue does the tunica externa have?
CT
What tissue is the tunica media made of? (2)
- smooth muscle
- elastic fibers (CT)
What tissues make up tunica intima/interna?
- enodothelium
- simple squamous epithelium
What does the lumen contain?
- blood (not a layer of the blood vessel)
What are the blood vessel types, following a path from the heart back to the heart? (5)
1) arteries
2) arterioles
3) capillaries
4) Venules
5) Veins
What are arteries?
- Carry blood away from the heart
- does not refer to oxy or deoxy!
What are the two types of arteries?
Elastic and muscular
What are elastic arteries? (3)
- elastic CT in all 3 layers
- largest arteries (near heart) ex. aorta
- in lecture, advantageous CT cuz pressure prevents bursting
What are muscular arteries? (2)
- a lot of smooth muscle
- most arteries
- ex. coronary artery
What are arterioles? (2)
- little arteries
- regulate blood flow and blood pressure
Which layer of blood vessels are capillaries found?
- tunica intima
What tissue makes up capillaries?
- endothelium (one cell layer) and basement membrane
What do capillaries allow for? (2)
- allows exchange of gases and nutrients (easy diffusion, close contact)
- gaps allow limited fluid and solutes to leak out = interstitial fluid
Capillaries unite to form?
venules and veins
