Topic 12: Cardiovascular System - Fetal Circulation Flashcards
1
Q
What is the function of the mother’s blood?
A
- gets O2 and nutrients
- fetus expels wastes here
2
Q
Where is the exchange site of nutrients, oxygen, etc?
A
- placenta
3
Q
Is the placenta blood of fetus and mother mixed?
A
- blood supply is close together, but not mixed
4
Q
What are 3 differences of fetal circulation to adult circulation?
A
- umbilical vein
- lungs and liver are basically non-functional
- umbilical arteries
5
Q
What are umbilical veins?
A
- carries oxy blood from placenta to vena cava (towards fetal heart)
6
Q
What type of blood do umbilical veins only have?
A
- has fully oxygenated blood
- others are either mixed or fully deoxygenated
7
Q
Why are the lungs and liver basically non-functional? (2)
A
- 3 shunts to bypass
- but some blood flow to these organs for nourishment/growth
8
Q
What are the 3 shunts called?
A
- ductus renosus
- foramen ovale
- ductus arteriosus
9
Q
What is the ductus renosus? (3)
A
- connects umbilical vein (oxy blood) to inferior vena cava (deoxy) to bypass liver
- oxygenated and deoxy blood mix
- mixed blood enters fetal heart via inferior vena cava
10
Q
What does the ductus renosus allow for?
A
- permits most of the oxygenated blood coming from the placenta to bypass the liver
11
Q
What is the foramen ovale? (2)
A
- hole in interatrial septum
- blood to move from right to left atrium (bypass lungs)
12
Q
What is the ductus arteriosus?
A
- connects pulmonary trunk and aorta to bypass lungs
13
Q
What are umbilical arteries?
A
- returns mixed blood to placenta (away from fetal heart)
