Topic 10: Skeletal System - Appendicular Skeleton Flashcards
What are the 4 components of the appendicular skeleton?
- Pectoral Girdle (upper limb girdle)
- Pelvic Girdle (lower limb girdle)
- Upper limb (in anatomical position)
- Lower Limb (in anatomical position)
What are the components of the pectoral girdle? (2)
- clavicle
- scapula
What is the clavicle? What is its function?
- collarbone
- connects axial and appendicular skeletons
What does the clavicle articulate with?
- sternum (manubrium) and scapula (acromion process)
What is the scapula? (2)
- shoulder blade
- spine (on posterior)
What are the three parts of the scapula?
- acromion process
- glenoid fossa/cavity
- coracoid process
What does the acromion process articulate with?
clavicle
What does the glenoid fossa/cavity articulate with?
- head of humerous
What does the coracoid process articulate with, and what is its function?
- does not articulate with other bones
- attaches muscles for arms and chest
What are the components of the Pelvic girdle? (2)
- made with 2 os coxae (hip bones) each with 3 bones
- joints
aka 6 bones 3 pairs
What are the 3 bones of the pelvic girdle?
- ilium
- ischium
- pubis
What does the ilium articulate with?
- sacrum
What is the ischium?
- most inferior part = ischial tuberosity
What is the pubis?
- left and right joined by pubic symphysis
What are the joints in the Pelvic girdle? (3)
- pubic symphysis
- sacroiliac joint (sacrum + ilium)
- acetabulum
What is the acetabulum? (2)
- articulates with head of femur
- all 3 bones of os coxa join here
Name all 6 bones that are part of the Upper Limb (in anatomical position).
1) humerous
2) radius (lateral, think thumbs up)
3) Ulna (medial)
4) carpals (wrist)
5) metacarpals (palm)
6) phalanges (digits/fingers)
How many carpals in your wrist per arm? Metacarpals? Phalanges?
- 8 carpals
- 5 metacarpals
- 14 phalanges
total of 30 bones per arm and leg
All Upper Limb Bones are ____ (long/short) bones, except ___.
- long
- carpals
Name the 7 bones of the Lower Limb in anatomical postion.
1) femur (articulates w/ acetabalum)
2) Patella (knee cap)
3) tibia (medial)
4) fibula (lateral)
5) tarsals (Talus and calcaneus must memorize)
6) Metatarsals (sole)
7) phalanges (toes)
What does the talus articulate with?
- tibia
What does the calcaneus bone of tarsals make up?
- heel bone
Name how many in the lower limb:
a) tarsals
b) metatarsals
c) phalanges
1) 7 tarsals
2) 5 metatarsals
3) 14 phalanges (each toe has 3, big toe has 2)
ALL bones in the lower limb are long bones, except? (2)
- patella
- tarsals
