Topic 12: Cardiovascular System - Conduction system Flashcards
1
Q
What is a conduction system? (2)
A
- cardiac muscle cells modified to produce and conduct electrical impulses
- do not contract
2
Q
What is the sinoatrial node, aka pacemaker of the heart? (2)
A
- In right atrium at the base of superior vena cava
- generates impulses the fastest - sets pace
3
Q
where is the atrioventricular node located?
A
- Base of right atrium
- in lecture, SA stimulates AV node
4
Q
where is the atrioventricular bundle located (Bundle of His)?
A
- superior part of interventricular septum
5
Q
What is the function of the atriventricular bundle?
A
- electrically connects atria to ventricles
6
Q
what are AV bundle branches?
A
- go to each ventricle
7
Q
What are Purkinje fibres?
A
- terminal fibers in ventricles only
8
Q
How do electrical signals spread?
A
- spread from conduction system to contractile cardiac cells, then they contract
9
Q
What type of circulation is the CV system?
A
- closed, double circulation
10
Q
What does it mean for the cardiovascular system to be a closed system?
A
- blood is confined to the heart and blood vessels
11
Q
What does it mean for the cardiovascular system to be a double system?
A
- 2 routes (pulmonary and systemic)
