What is the uterus?
- hollow organ
What are the three parts of a uterus?
- fundus
- Body
- Cervix
Where is the fundus of the uterus?
- above level of uterine tubes
What is the body of the uterus? (2)
- main portion
- space within is the uterine cavity
What is the cervix of the uterus? (2)
- inferior, narrow portion
- opens into vagina
What do the supportive membranes of the uterus attach?
- uterus to abdominal wall
What are the three supportive membranes of the uterus?
- broad ligaments
- round ligaments
- uterosacral ligaments
What are round ligaments made of?
– fibrous CT that attach to anterior wall
What are uterosacral ligaments made of?
peritoneum that attach to sacrum
What are the 3 histological layers of the uterus?
- perimetrium
- myometrium
- endometrium
What is the perimetrium? (2)
- outer layer
- visceral peritoneum
What is the myometrium made of?
- 3 layers of smooth muscle (muscularis)
What is the endometrium made of?
- mucous membrane
What is the function of endometrium?
- contains endometrial glands that secrete a nutritive fluid
What are the 2 layers of the endomemtrium?
- stratum functionalis
- stratum basalis
What is the stratum functionalis? ie. location and what it does
- faces uterine cavity
- sheds monthly (menstruation)
What is the stratum basalis in the endometrium? ie. what does it do (2)
- permanent
- undergoes mitosis ti replace functionalis
