Topic 16: Urinary System - Juxtaglomerular Complex + Ureters Flashcards
1
Q
What is the juxtaglomerular complex?
A
- Point of contact between end of ascending limb, afferent and efferent arterioles at renal corpuscle of same nephron
2
Q
What is the function of the juxtaglomerular complex?
A
regulates filtrate formation
3
Q
what are the two parts of the juxtaglomerular complex?
A
tubular portion and arteriolar portion
4
Q
What is the tubular portion of the juxtaglomerular complex?
A
- modified (tall and narrow) ascending limb cells called macula densa
- in lecture, they detect concentration of sodium
5
Q
What is the arteriolar portion? (2)
A
- afferent and efferent arteriolar portion
- called granular (juxtaglomerular cells)
6
Q
What does the arteriolar portion contain?
A
renin (enzyme and hormone)
7
Q
What is the function of the arteriolar portion?
A
- monitors blood pressure
8
Q
What is the mucosa of ureters?
A
- transitional epithelium
9
Q
What is the submucosa of ureters? (2)
A
- none
- lamina propria connected directly to muscularis externa
10
Q
What is the muscularis externa of the ureters?
A
- smooth muscle (3 layers)
11
Q
What is the adventitia/serosa of ureters?
A
- retroperitoneal
