Topic 2: Proteins + Nucleic Acids Flashcards
1
Q
What elements make up proteins?
A
C, H, O, N, and sometimes S
ex. albumin
2
Q
What is the function of proteins? (4)
A
- Structural material (like collagen)
- enzymes, hormones, transporters
- antibodies
- source of energy (esp. when carbs and lipids are in low supply)
3
Q
What are the monomers of proteins?
A
- amino acids
- these are the basic building blocks of proteins
- each amino acid has its own name (e.g. glycine)
4
Q
What are dipeptides?
A
- 2 AA joined by a peptide bond
5
Q
What are polypeptides?
A
- many amino acids joined by a peptide bond
6
Q
What is the definition of a protein?
A
- 1 or more polypeptides folded into the final shape
7
Q
What elements do nucleic acids consist of?
A
C, H, O, N, P
8
Q
What are the 2 forms of nucleic acids?
A
- DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
-RNA (ribonucleic acid)
9
Q
What are the monomers, or building blocks of nucleic acids?
A
- nucleotides
10
Q
What does each nucleotide consist of? (3)
A
- P04- (phosphate)
- monosaccharide (simple sugar) - either ribose in RNA or deoxyribose in DNA
- organic base (ATCGU)
