Topic 13: Lymphatic System - Overview Flashcards
1
Q
What does the lymphatic system include? (4)
A
- lymph vessels
- nodules
- organs
- T and B lymphocytes
2
Q
What is the purpose of T and B lymphocytes?
A
- protect body against bacteria, viruses, cancer cells
3
Q
what are the three major extracellular fluids?
A
- blood plasma
- interstitial fluid
- lymph
4
Q
What is blood plasma?
A
fluid in blood
5
Q
What is interstitial fluid?
A
- bathes cells (except blood cells)
6
Q
What is lymph?
A
- inside lymphatic cells
7
Q
What is interstitial fluid (ISF)?
A
- formed by capillaries leaking plasma
8
Q
Where is ISF found? (2)
A
- 90% re-enters blood in capillaries and venules
- 10% into lymphatic circulation (now called lymph)
9
Q
Where does lymph enter?
A
- enters lymphatic capillaries (closed ended vessels)
10
Q
Where do lymphatic capillaries connect to? (2)
A
- connect to lymphatic collecting vessels (have valves)
- lymph nodes along vessels filter bacteria and debris
11
Q
What do lymphatic collecting vessels do?
A
- transport lymph AWAY from tissues toeither the right lymphatic duct or thoracic duct
12
Q
What is the right lymphatic duct? (2)
A
- lymph from right head, chest and arm
- drains into right subclavian vein reentering blood circulation below clavicle)
13
Q
From where does the thoracic duct collect lymph? (2)
A
- lymph from below ribs and left side of body
- drains into left subclavian vein reentering blood circulation
14
Q
What is the function of the thoracic duct?
A
- collecting vessels from below the ribs converge to an enlarged lymph vessel called the cisterna chyli
15
Q
What is the cisterna chyli?
A
most inferior part of the thoracic duct
