Topic 19: Nervous System - CNS Protective Features - Bone, Meninges, CFS Flashcards
Name the protective features of the CNS (5)
- bone
- Meninges
- CFS
- Blood brain barrier
- Cerebral Arterial Circle
What bones protect the CNS? (2)
- skull
- vertebral column
What are meninges?
CT around the brain and spinal cord
What are the three layers of meninges?
- Dura Mater (outer)
- arachnoid mater (mid)
- Pia mater (inner)
What are the features of dura mater surrounding the brain? (2)
- 2 fused layers
- separated in some places to form spaces called venous (dural) sinuses that contain blood
What is the dura mater surrounding the spinal cord? layers, deep and superficial (3)
- 1 layer
- deep to dura mater = subdural space, filled with ISF
- superficial to dura mater is epidural space (spinal cord only)
What is the epidural space filled with?
- fat, blood vessels, CT, etc/
Is arachnoid mater vascular or avascular?
- avascular
What does the subarachnoid space contain? (2)
- CSF
- web-like strands of CT secure it to pia mater below
What are arachnoid granulations? (3) ie. location and what goes on in there
- in brain only
- project into dural sinuses
- CSF enters granulations to return to blood
What are characteristics of pia mater? (2)
- on surface of CNS (brain and spinal cord)
- vascular
What is meningitis?
- inflammation of meninges
Where is CSF found? (2)
- surrounds brain and spinal cord
- in brain ventricles and central canal of spinal cord
What are ventricles?
- spaces inside brain (filled with CSF)
Where are all 4 ventricles found?
2 lateral ventricles (1 and 2) in cerebrum
3rd ventricle in diencephalon
4th ventricle surrounded by pons, medulla oblongata, cerebellum
