Topic 12: Cardiovascular System - Valves + cardiac muscle Flashcards
What are the two types of valves in the heart?
- atrioventricular (AV)
- semilunar
what are the two AV valves?
- bicuspid (mitral)
- tricuspid
What side of the heart is the bicuspid AV valve?
- left side
- 2 cusps
what side of the heart is the tricuspid valve?
- right
- 3 cusps
its always right to try
what are chordae tendineae? (2)
- connective tissue
- attach AV valve cusps to papillary muscles to prevent eversion of cusps
What are papillary muscles?
- projections of the myocardium
How many cusps do semilunar valves have?
- 3 cusps each
name the two semi lunar valves
aortic and pulmonary
in lecture, they prevent blood from going back to heart
What does the aortic valve separate?
- separates left ventricle + aorta
what does the pulmonary valve separate?
- separates right ventricle and pulmonary trunk
in the lab, where is the moderator band?
in right ventricle
what do the cardiac muscle cells form?
- form both contractile myocardium and conduction system
see diagram pg 4
how are cardiac muscle cells similar to skeletal muscle? (2)
- striated - myofibrils with sarcomeres
- has a sarcoplasmic reticulum an T-tubules
how are cardiac muscle cells different to skeletal muscles?
- branched (myofibrils with sarcomeres)
- uninucleated
- intercalculated discs (only found in cardiac muscle)
what are intercalculated discs? (2)
- region where two fibers meet
- contain anchoring and gap junctions
