teological argument Flashcards
What is the teological argument?
Goal/purpose, inductee and posteriors as they draw conclusions from evidence
What are the bases of this argument?
When we see things that are beautiful or pattered/complex with a purpose we assume they have been designed by an intelligent designers
beauty doesn’t come coincidental
World has a function
World must have been created by an intelligent being, like machines are
That being is God, God exists
what is Aquinas’ 5th way?
Design argument version. Nature has an order and purpose to it. Everything in nature that is moving must have a guiding hand/ goal. Inanimate objects like planets could not have ordered themselves as they have no intelligence to do so, so created by an intelligent being
What is William Paley’s argument?
A watch on a heath, Paley compared a stone to a watch that if you stumbled across it you’d question the watches origins whereas you wouldn’t question the stones. This is exactly the way he looked at the world, the world is so intricate must have had an intelligent designer
What was Tennants argument?
Another version of the design argument, the theory of evolution. Evolution itself sees to have a purpose. Creatures don’t randomly evolve, they progress. Evolution is guided by God and has a purpose.
Evolution was evidence
Necessties to sustain life
Progress of evolution towards emergence of intelligent human life
What was the ahtropic principle?
The natural laws of the universe have been fine tuned to allow human life to exist. If the laws of gravity were slightly different the human race could not have existed
What is the Aesthetic principle?
Nothing I. Darwin’s theory of evolution can explain why humans feel a love of appreciation of art, music. Since these characteristics don’t aid us in any survival way, natural selection cant account for these. This joy wad put into by our designer God
How did Richard Swinburne contribute to the anthropic principle?
Creates the fine tuning argument to suggest the earth is too finely tuned to be like this on its own. Science can explain the fine tuning but what thy cant explain is why science has worked in our favour for years
How does Swinburne contribute to the aesthetic principle?
Beauty is not necessary for survival “biologically superfluous accompaniment of the cosmic process” The beauty in the. world does not offer a function so doesn’t need to be so much of it bt put there by God.
