Critisiers of the existence of God Flashcards
What did Hume say about the existence of God?
He was an empiricist who said we can only rely on evidence
What were Hume’s structures of the argument?
1-st argued the structure was fallacious
2nd- related to causation
concepts of contingency and necessity
What was Hume’s 1st argument?
Just because the elements of a chain has a cause doesn’t mean the chain needs a cause. 20 particles it would seem wrong to find out each particle- fallacy of composition (then remembered vy Russell) who said every man has a mother doesn’t mean there is a mother of the human race
What was Hume’s second argument?
Some people say ‘the whole’ needs a cause but it I in fact an arbitrary of mind
What was Humes third argument?
“it is neither intuitively or demonstratively certain” that every object that begins to exist has a cause. Why should there just be one creator and not 2 parents like offspring?
What did Hume say about experience of th universe?
We have experience of houses and their beginnings but not with the universe . Theory of causation- epistemological limits
What is the notion of causation”?
‘habit of mind; that something exists indecently within the object, we can observe the motion of one ball following another but if we link that in our mind we have no evidence of that
How did Hume attack Aquinas’ third way?
Can’t the qualities of cointingeny and necessity belong to the universe itself?
What was the Epicurean hypothesis?
The universe was chaotic
