Chapter 16: Host-Microbe Interactions: Invasion Continued Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 3 portals of entry for invasion
A
- Mucous membranes
- Skin
- Parenteral Route
2
Q
Name the 4 portals of entry as per mucous membranes
A
- respiratory tract
- GI tract
- Genitourinary Tract
- Conjunctiva
3
Q
How is the respiratory tract a portal of entry? (2)
A
- most common portal of entry
- microbes inhaled into nose or mouth
ex. colds, influenze
4
Q
How is the GI tract a portal of entry? (3)
A
- germs enter in food or water
- most are destroyed by acid (stomach) or by bile (intestine)
- some can survive, Ex. Vibrio Cholera
5
Q
How is the Genitourinary Tract a portal of entry? (2)
A
- STIs
- most pathogens require a broken mucous membrane
ex. a cut or a microabrasion
6
Q
How is the conjunctiva a portal of entry?
A
- membrane covering the eye
7
Q
How is the skin a classification of a portal of entry? (3)
A
- unbroken skin is impenetrable by most microbes
- some microbes can cause infections of hair follicles (acne)
- most require a wound for entry
8
Q
How is the parenteral route a classification of a portal of entry?
A
- microbes deposited directly into tissues when skin or membranes are broken
note that parenteral means outside of the digestive tract (not mouth or alimentary canal)
9
Q
Give 2 examples of how the parenteral route is a portal of entry
A
- Tick bite can introduce bacteria into host, causes lyme disease
- Intravenous injections with contaminated syringe can cause HIV
