8.2.1 - Brain: Structure & Function Flashcards
What Are The Different Sections Within The Brain?
(4 Points)
~ Cerebrum.
~ Hypothalamus.
~ Cerebellum.
~ Medulla oblongata.
Describe The Cerebrum
(5 Points)
~ Largest part of the brain.
~ Divided into 2 halves -> the cerebral hemispheres, which are joined together by a band of nerve fibres called the corpus callosum.
~ Right hemisphere controls the left side of the body, the left hemisphere controls the right side.
~ Thin outer layer known as the cerebral cortex.
~ Beneath the cerebral cortex layer is the white matter, which consist of the myelinated axons of neurones.
Describe The ‘Cerebral Cortex’ Of The Cerebrum
(4 Points)
~ Consists of cell bodies of neurones.
~ Highly folded, increasing its surface area allowing a greater number of neurones.
~ More neurones means more neurone connections can be made.
~ Means greater the ability of the brain to carry out more complex behaviours.
Describe The Function Of The Cerebrum
(8 Points)
~ Vision.
~ Hearing.
~ Speech.
~ Thinking.
~ Memory.
~ Leading.
~ Movement.
~ Emotions.
Describe The Hypothalamus
~ Monitors the blood as it flows through the brain.
~ In response, releases hormones or stimulates the neighbouring pituitary gland to release hormones.
