5.4.1 - Evolution By Natural Selection Flashcards
What Is Meant By ‘Evolution’?
When the frequency of an allele, in a population changes overtime.
What May Cause Alleles To Change?
Random mutation, causing them to be more or less advantageous.
What Is Natural Selection?
When organisms are better adapted to their environment, continue life processes, passing on their advantageous alleles, causing these alleles to increase in frequency within a population.
What Needs To Be Present For Natural Selection To Occur?
Variations existing between individuals in a population.
What Is A Source Of Variation?
Mutations.
Describe The Process Of Natural Selection
(5 Points)
~ Variations in alleles are present in the population, due to random gene mutations.
~ Meaning some individuals are better adapted to the environment, against predation and competition for natural resources.
~ These individuals are more likely to survive and reproduce to pass on their advantageous allele.
~ This advantageous allele, will increase in frequency within the population.
~ This allele will become most common, as the unfavourable allele decreases in frequency.
