~ Active transport.
~ DNA replication.
~ Cell division.
~ Protein synthesis.
What Do Animals Need Energy For?
(6 Points)
~ Muscle contraction.
~ Maintenance of body temperature.
~ Active transport.
~ DNA replication.
~ Cell division.
~ Protein synthesis.
Describe ATP
(2 Points)
~ Used to transfer and supply energy within cells, as it can diffuse within cells to where it is needed.
~ Phosphorylated molecule, consists of 3 phosphate groups.
Describe How ATP Is Produced
(6 Points)
~ Produced during respiration by the addition of inorganic phosphate (ADP + Pi -> ATP).
~ ATP synthase catalyses this reaction.
~ The breakdown of glucose in respiration releases the energy needed to phosphorylate ADP.
~ The hydrolysis of ATP, releases an inorganic phosphate as well as a small amount of energy that can be used by the cell (ATP -> ADP + Pi).
~ The hydrolysis of ATP is catalysed by the enzyme ATPase.
~ The ADP + Pi produced by the hydrolysis of ATP can be recycled to make more ATP.
