6.2.5 - T Cell Response Flashcards
What Are T Cells & Where Are They Produced?
(2 Points)
~ Type of white blood cell involved with the specific immune response, activated by antigen presenting cells.
~ Produced in the bone marrow, mature in the thymus.
What Can Antigen Presenting Cells Be?
(3 Points)
~ Phagocyte (Macrophage).
~ Infected body cell.
~ Pathogen.
What Is The Surface Of A T Cell Covered With?
(2 Points)
~ T cell receptors, that are specific to a particular type of antigen.
~ Each T cell will bind to a different antigen.
Describe The T Cell Response
(3 Points)
~ Activated once they encounter and bind to their complementary antigen on the surface of an antigen presenting cell.
~ Activated T cells then divide by mitosis to increase in number by producing clones of its self with the same T cell receptor on its surface.
~ As they divide they differentiate into different types of T cells, which all carry out different functions.
What Are The Different T cells, Once They Have Differentiated?
(3 Points)
~ T helper cells.
~ T killer cells.
~ T memory cells.
What Do T Helper Cells Do?
Release chemical signalling molecules that activate B cells, T killer cells and macrophages.
What Do T Killer Cells Do?
Bind to the relevant specific antigen on an infected cell, destroying it.
What Do T Memory Cells Do?
Remain in the blood and enable a faster specific immune response if the same pathogen is encountered again.
