2.3.4 - Amino Acids & Peptide Bonds Flashcards
Describe Proteins
(2 Points)
~ Are polymers, made of monomers called amino acids.
~ The sequence, type and number of amino acids within a proteins determines its shape and therefore function.
Describe Amino Acids
(2 Points)
~ Are the monomers of polypeptides.
~ All living things share a bank of 20 amino acids, the only difference between them is there carbon-containing R group.
Describe Amino Acids Structure
(4 Points)
~ Amine (Amino) group, -NH2.
~ A carboxyl group, -COOH.
~ A hydrogen atom.
~ Carbon containing R group.
Describe The Peptide Bond
(5 Points)
~ Form between amino acids.
~ A hydroxyl group (-OH) is lost from the carboxylic group of one amino acid and a hydrogen atom is lost from the amine group of another amino acid.
~ The remaining carbon atom from the first amino acid bonds to the nitrogen atom of the second amino acid.
~ This is a condensation reaction so water is released which could form polypeptides are dipeptides.
~ During hydrolysis, additions of water breaks the peptide bonds resulting in polypeptides being broken down to amino acids.
How Are Dipeptides Formed?
By the condensation of two amino acids.
How Are Polypeptides Formed?
By the condensation of two or more amino acids.
