1.1.8 - Blood Clotting Flashcards
What Does Blood Clotting Do?
(3 Points)
~ Prevent excess loss of blood.
~ Prevents the entry of pathogens.
~ Provides a barrier / scab.
Describe The Steps That Occur In Thrombosis
(5 Points)
~ Thromboplastin is released from the damaged blood vessel.
~ Thromboplastin and calcium ions from the plasma trigger the conversion of soluble prothrombin protein into the enzyme thrombin.
~ Thrombin then catalyses the conversion of the soluble protein fibrinogen to the insoluble protein fibrin.
~ The fibrin fibres then form a mesh and tangle together which then causes platelets and red blood cells get trapped in.
~ Blood clot is then formed.
What Is A Stroke?
A rapid loss of brain function, due to the disruption in the blood supply to the brain.
What Is A Stroke Caused By?
Caused by a blood clot in an artery leading to the brain, reducing the amount of blood and oxygen that can reach the brain.
How Can Blood Clots Cause Heart Attacks?
(2 Points)
~ The coronary arteries become blocked by a blood clot, meaning that an area of the heart muscle will be cut off from its blood supply, no oxygen would be received.
~ Causing a myocardial infarction.
What Is Another Word For A Heart Attack?
Myocardial infarction.
What Is Coronary Heart Disease Caused By?
By the formation of atheroma’s and blood clots in the coronary arteries.
What Are Symptoms Of A Heart Attack?
(3 Points)
~ Chest pain.
~ Shortness of breath.
~ Sweating.
When Does Complete Heart Failure Occur?
When large areas of the heart are affected by blood clots.
What Is Deep Vein Thrombosis?
(3 Points)
~ Occurs when a blood clot forms deep inside the body.
~ Common in veins in the legs.
~ Caused by prolonged inactivity, old age and some medications.
