Q
  • A theory that points out that the body’s organs and cell tissues are getting worn out due to repeated use and abuse like stress, physical exertion, and bodily damage. Damaged tissues accumulate and produce effects of aging. One example is collagen, an elastic tissue that allows the skin to be flexible, as people age it “wears” and becomes less stretchy causing the skin to sag and wrinkle.

Q

A more modern/updated version of the wear-and-tear theory that gives a more biological explanation. Free radicals are oxygen molecules that have an unstable electron that bounces around the cell, stealing electrons from other molecules and increasing the damage to the structures in the cell.

Q

This theory suggests that an elderly person is more accepting of aging when they remain active in some way. Volunteering, wholeheartedly pursuing a hobby even an old one, maintaining social connections, and attending social events are some of the few examples of elderly people being active and are shown to have a happier and longer life compared to those who don’t do any form of activity.
