7.6 - Blood, Tissue Fluid & Lymph Flashcards
The composition and functions of blood How tissue fluid forms from plasma The composition and role of lymph
What is blood?
Fluid that transports substances around circulatory system
What does blood consist of?
- Plasma - Mostly water, transports substances in solution.
- Red blood cells - Carry oxygen.
- White blood cells - Immune cells.
- Platelets - Involved in clotting.
What are the functions of blood?
Transports oxygen carbon dioxide nutrients waste hormones food clotting factors
What is tissue fluid?
Fluid filling spaces between cells
What is the function of tissue fluid?
Site of diffusion between blood and body cells helps fight infection
How does tissue fluid differ from plasma?
No red blood cells fewer proteins fewer white blood cells
How is tissue fluid formed?
From blood flowing through capillaries
What happens at the arteriole end of capillaries?
High hydrostatic pressure forces fluid out
What happens at the venule end of capillaries?
Hydrostatic pressure lower oncotic pressure higher water potential lower tissue fluid moves back in
What is lymph?
Fluid that flows around lymphatic system
How does lymph differ from tissue fluid?
Less oxygen nutrients more fatty acids more lymphocytes
How is lymph formed?
From tissue fluid
How is lymph transported?
Muscle contractions
What filters pathogens from lymph?
Lymph nodes
Where does lymph eventually return to?
Blood
