5.2 - Phagocytosis Flashcards
The role of phagocytes in the immune response The process of phagocytosis
What is phagocytosis?
Non-specific defense involving phagocytes
What are phagocytes?
White blood cells that engulf and destroy pathogens
Where are phagocytes found?
Blood and body tissues
How does phagocytosis begin?
Phagocyte recognizes pathogen’s antigens as non-self
What happens after the phagocyte binds to the pathogen?
Phagocyte engulfs the pathogen
What is the vesicle containing the pathogen called?
Phagosome
What fuses with the phagosome?
Lysosome
What do lysosomes contain?
Hydrolytic enzymes (lysozymes)
What does the fusion of lysosome and phagosome form?
Phagolysosome
What do lysozymes do?
Digest and destroy the pathogen
What does the phagocyte do after digesting the pathogen?
Presents pathogen’s antigens on its surface
What is a phagocyte called after presenting antigens?
Antigen-presenting cell (APC)
