6.7 - Ventilation Flashcards
What ventilation is The muscles involved in breathing The process of inspiration The process of expiration
What is ventilation?
Movement of air into and out of the lungs
What does ventilation consist of?
Inspiration and expiration
What is the function of ventilation?
Allows air to enter and leave the lungs:
* Providing the body with oxygen
* Removing carbon dioxide.
What encloses the thorax?
Ribcage
What controls ventilation?
Muscles attached to the ribcage
What are the muscles that act on the ribcage?
Diaphragm
What does the diaphragm do during contraction?
Moves ribcage up and out
What do external intercostal muscles do during contraction?
Pull ribcage up and out
What do internal intercostal muscles do during contraction?
Pull ribcage down and in
What type of process is inspiration?
Active
What happens during inspiration?
External intercostals contract
What type of process is normal expiration at rest?
Passive
What happens during expiration?
External intercostals relax
What happens during forced expiration?
Internal intercostals contract
What helps push air out during expiration?
Elastic fibers in alveoli recoil
