WHAT IS VERBAL COMMUNICATION?
A
- Also known as oral communication
- Each element works together to ensure the message is clear and effective
Three elements involved:
- Verbal element: What we actually say the words
- Vocal element: How we say it: tone and pitch
- Visual element: What the receiver sees, facial expressions and gestures

- Waitress informing the chef of dietary requirements
- HR conducting induction training or changes to laws

WHAT IS WRITTEN COMMUNICATION?
A
- Important component of communication as poor spelling or grammatical communication issues may also cause conflict
- Must be clear, concise, legible, complete, accurate, courteous and culturally sensitive

- Cleaning schedule
- Standard recipe card
- Menu
- Letters, emails, books, magazines, faxes, guest requests, order forms
- Food purchase orders

A
- Give clues and additional information and meaning over and above spoken communication
- Allows people to regulate the flow of information

WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION?

- When greeting quests
- Shaking hands
- Bowing
- Eye contact, body language, gestures, how we dress or act, facial expressions

WHAT IS VISUAL COMMUNICATION?

- Reinforces written communication or in some cases can replace it
- Can be more powerful/appropriate when dealing with customers who are eg from non english speaking backgrounds

- Universal signage eg wet floor, bathroom, first aid, hot and cold colour identification, caution, emergency
- Sings, drawings, graphic designs, charts
